Annual Bun Census 2026
The definitive count. Conducted annually since 2023. Reviewed by nobody, because nobody asked. The situation has not improved.
Headline findings*
of lunchtime disappointments traceable to suboptimal bun quality or bun-related structural failure.
increase in general life satisfaction among people who switched to flatbread or open-faced alternatives.
sandwiches improved by the addition of a bun. The census team checked twice.
The data
Bun population by species
Share of all bun sightings, 2026. Species as defined in the Field Guide to Bun Species.
Hot cross bun figures are seasonally adjusted. Before Easter they are not.
Where buns are encountered
Share of encounters by location, 2026.
Encounters in dreams were self-reported and are probably higher.
Reasons given for eating a bun
Share of respondents, 2026. One reason per respondent.
Respondents who answered “it was there” were asked a follow-up question. None of them had an answer.
Methodology
None.
The census team stood near a bakery for one afternoon and felt strongly about what they saw. Figures were rounded to the nearest feeling. Where data was missing, the team assumed the worst, which was usually correct.
Limitations
- The croissant was excluded on principle. See the Field Guide.
- Bagel sightings were recorded but not counted. The bagel's status remains under review.
- Sample size: confidential. Margin of error: also confidential.
- The census was not funded. This is reflected in the methodology.
